One of our customers in MA has ongoing contract needs for Optical Communications Systems Engineers to support current activities in developing and testing high-bandwidth free-space optical communications systems primarily for long distance air-to-air applications, but also including ship or land vehicle platforms.
Responsibilities: -Develop fieldable free-space optical (FSO) and fiber-optic communication systems in the laboratory. -Analyze FSO systems concepts to identify technology and methods for producing robust FSO communications links. -Participate in field test activities to evaluate FSO and fiber-optic communication systems. -Document task results via memoranda, briefings, conference proceedings, and journal articles. -Interact with government sponsors to develop requirements and advanced concepts for FSO and fiber-optic communication systems and architectures.
Requirements: -B.S. or M.S. in physics or electrical engineering or equivalent, with emphasis in optical communications. -At least 5 years experience in experimental development of optical communication systems, with specific experience in at least one of the following: high-speed optical communication transceivers, modems, and amplifiers, other high-speed photonic devices and applications, modulation schemes, error correction techniques, optical terminal design, pointing and tracking, etc. -Must be able to work effectively as part of a team. -Strong verbal, presentation and written skills.
Desired: -Ph.D. in physics or electrical engineering or equivalent with emphasis in free-space optical communications. -At least 10 years experience in the experimental development of optical communication systems outlined above. -Demonstrated experimental skills for developing free-space optics and fiber optic devices and systems.

Our client in the Bedford, MA area has a long-term contract opening for a Senior Optical Systems Engineer to help develop optical systems for ground, air and space. Applicants MUST be US Citizens. Summary: -Responsible for system requirements' trade analyses, system architecture definition, optical design, performance evaluation and tolerancing, component and system specification definition, component and system fabrication oversight, system alignment and testing.
Requirements: -PhD in Optical Engineering or Physics with a concentration in optics OR a MS and 5 years of directly applicable experience. -Minimum of 5 years experience in optical systems engineering. -Must have experience in optical design, performance evaluation and budgeting, optical component fabrication and testing, and optical system alignment and testing. -Should have experience with a broad range of optical systems: visible, IR, reflective, refractive, ground, space and aircraft systems. -Optical design experience with proficiency in Zemax or Code V helpful. -Knowledge of stray light analysis software is desirable.

The work will include analysis, design, integration, and testing applied to the development of complex optical hardware from conceptual design through fabrication and performance evaluation. Candidate must be interested in working on a broad range of optical problems from system conceptual design, ray tracing and tolerancing, specification and oversight of optical component fabrication, and optical system alignment and testing. This position involves working in close-knit teams with design, analysis and test personnel.
Qualifications: -Education: BS in Optical Engineering -Experience: Should have a broad-based optical engineering education. -A working knowledge of Zemax and familiarity with stray light analysis -Must have demonstrated experience working in multi-disciplinary teams, excellent communication skills, and the ability to produce and present professional written and oral reports.

One of our longest standing customers, located in Lexington, MA, currently has a long-term contract opening for an Optical Communications Engineer to perform a variety of important tasks in the development of custom optical communications systems. The Optical Communications Engineer will be part of a small team of experienced technical staff developing electro-optics subsystems that will be used for communicating between the earth and a satellite in lunar orbit. He/she will use high-quality dedicated laboratory equipment and electro-optics hardware. Applicants MUST be US Citizens and be eligible to receive Secret Security Clearances.
Responsibilities: -Test and characterization of fiber-optic components. -Fusion splicing specialty fiber types, optimizing splicing parameters for dissimilar fiber types. -Develop data acquisition and instrument control software to support testing needs.
Skills: -Laboratory experience working with lasers and fiber-optic components, including fiber splicing. -Experience with data acquisition and instrument control. -Ability to help troubleshoot optical, software, electronic, and mechanical issues as they arise.
Minimum Requirements: -Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics. -Matlab and LabVIEW programming experience desired.
